Talcum Powder Lawsuits

More than 50,000 cancer lawsuits are currently pending in the Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) filed by people who believe that they developed cancer after using talc-based Johnson's Baby Powder. In April 2023, Johnson & Johnson proposed an $8.9 billion bankruptcy settlement to resolve these lawsuits.

Talcum powder, or baby powder, is a common personal hygiene product used by many women. Some of the most popular brands include Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower and Johnson’s Baby Powder, among others. The primary ingredient in these products is talc, which is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate. However, when used in the genital area or on sanitary pads, tampons, or diaphragms, the tiny particles can enter the body and reach the ovaries.

In 2013, a study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research investigated the link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer. The study included data from 8,525 women with ovarian cancer and 9,859 cancer-free women. The results showed that regular application of talcum powder in the genital area increased the risk of developing an ovarian tumor by 24%.

According to a case in 2013, a woman who used Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower product for around 30 years developed ovarian cancer. It was found that such dusting leads to almost 10,000 new cases of ovarian cancer per year, which make up 45% of new cases each year. The plaintiff was granted a favorable verdict by the jury.

Several talcum powder companies are being sued for not warning female consumers of the risks of genital dusting.
